Food industry were available for a transitional period of three years to arrange for the effective implementation of these rules by 13 December 2014, however the market will still sell products labeled under the old rules, as the EC Regulation provides for exhaustion stocks of food placed on the market or labeled maitred before 13 December 2014 (this does not include the depletion of available labels).
Rules on mandatory nutrition information will only apply from 13 December 2016 However, when food values are declared maitred on the label after December 13, 2014, they must be in accordance maitred with the provisions of the Regulation.
We are currently developing a database for the EU to facilitate the identification of all the rules for compulsory labeling of both EU and national level. This will allow all businesses and small and medium enterprises in the food industry to make inquiries using easy-to-use tool, the EC said.
The EC reminded maitred that the new rules for the compulsory indication on the labeling of nutritional value (energy, fat, saturates, carbohydrates, sugars, protein and salt) per 100 grams or milligrams of processed foods will apply from 13 December 2016.
